UNCLAIMED REFUND CHECKS
The Internal Revenue Service is looking for 115,478 taxpayers who are due refund checks worth about $110 million after the checks were returned as undeliverable.The refund checks, averaging about $953 , can be claimed as soon as taxpayers update their addresses with the IRS. Some taxpayers have more than one check waiting.The “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov enables taxpayers to check the status of their refunds. A taxpayer must submit his or her social security number, filing status and amount of refund shown on their 2006 return. The tool will provide the status of their refund and in some cases provide instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.Taxpayers can access a telephone version of “Where’s My Refund?” by calling 1-800-829-1954.And don’t forget Stortz & Associates if you move or change your phone number! You can call our office at any time to provide us with updated contact information to avoid any delays in processing your tax returns.

RESTRICTIONS ON CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS
New restrictions on claiming charitable contributions that began in 2006 continue into 2007. These rules are the following: (1) no deduction is allowed for charitable contributions of clothing and household items if such items are not in good used condition or better; (2) the IRS may deny a deduction for any item with minimal monetary value; and (3) the restrictions in (1) and (2) do not apply to the contribution of any single clothing or household item for which a deduction of $500 or more is claimed if the tax payer includes a qualified appraisal with his or her return. Effective January 1, 2007, charitable contributions of money, regardless of the amount, will be denied a deduction, unless the donor maintains a cancelled check, bank record, or receipt from the donee organization showing the name of the donee organization, and the date and amount of the contribution.

BETHEL BIBLE CHURCH FELLOWSHIP DRIVE
Each year during the holiday season, the team at Stortz & Associates participates in a food bank hosted by Bethel Bible Fellowship Church in Emmaus. Their program, called “Groceries Plus”, provides groceries to 40 - 50 families every month – most of them are Emmaus residents.
If you’d like to help make someone’s holidays a little brighter, feel free to drop off your non-perishable food donation to our Emmaus office any time before Friday, December 14th, 2007, during business hours. We thank you in advance for your generous contribution!

ALTERNATIVE MINIMUM TAX (AMT)
The AMT was created in 1969. It was intended to target 155 high-income taxpayers to ensure that they could not use tax breaks or deductions to avoid paying any taxes. The AMT was never indexed for inflation - as such, more and more middle-income taxpayers have been subject to this tax.
In 2006, 3.5 million taxpayers paid $24 billion in AMT (4% of taxpayers). Without changes, it is estimated that 25.9% of taxpayers will pay the AMT in 2007.
The AMT disallows many deductions and exemptions allowable when computing your tax liability, such as personal exemptions, standard deductions, state & local income taxes, sales tax and real estate taxes. “Preference items”, such as large capital gains, accelerated depreciation, and exercising incentive options, can trigger the AMT. It provides an “alternative” set of rules for calculating your income tax. If your regular income tax liability is less than this “minimum” tax, you must pay the AMT to make up the difference between your regular income tax and the AMT. The minimum tax is more like a flat tax, with few deductions. It has basically two rates, 26% on the first $175,000 of AMT income and 28% on anything above that.
Currently, Congress is reviewing potential legislation from both Democrats and Republicans which, if passed, could dramatically affect the AMT for the upcoming tax year. The IRS estimates it will take 10 weeks to reprogram its computer systems after Congress enacts an AMT patch bill. The 2008 filing season begins January 14, 2008 – which is less than 10 weeks away.

computerized bookkeeping - finding reports
Have you ever tried to look for a report and not find it? You can save your most valuable reports in a convenient place both in QuickBooks and Peachtree.
QuickBooks:- Go to the Reports pull down menu, select Memorized Reports and then click on Memorized Reports List.
- On the Memorized Report List window click on the Memorized Report TAB at the bottom left corner of the screen. Select NEW GROUP.
- Add a name for your new report group. For example “My Reports”
- Now anytime you view a report you can click on the MEMORIZE button and save in Memorized Report Group: “My Reports”.
- Accessing all your commonly used reports is now simple just to go the Reports pull down menu and choose Memorized Reports the click on My Reports to view all your memorized reports.
Note: If you change the report display or filters remember to click on the memorize button again to save your new report display or filters.
Peachtree:
- Go to the Reports & Forms pull down menu (prior to version 2008 the menu just reads Reports) then find and click on Report Groups.
- Click on the GROUP icon on the top left of the screen.
- A pop up window Report Group window will appear.
- The list on the left is a Report Index list. This is a list of all available reports that you can add to your Report Group. To select a report simply click on it once then click on the ADD button.
- A copy of the report will be moved to your Report Group. Continue to add all the reports you want in your group. The remove button is available if you want to “deselect” a report you previously added.
- Once the list is complete click on the SAVE button.
- You will be prompted to name your Report Group. For example “My Reports”. Then click on SAVE and close the Report Group window.
- Accessing all your commonly used reports is now simple just to go the Reports & Forms pull down menu and choose Report Groups. A list will appear by Report Group Name. Click one time on the report group name to view the saved reports.
Note: Follow the above steps 1-7 if you have NO existing report groups. If you do have an existing report group and want to complete steps 1-7 for a new group you should select any other report AREA other than Report Groups Area.
